Your wood floors will always offer signs that it is struggling. These issues will become evident in a number of ways. It is important to pay attention to these issues rather than ignore them. There is no magic wand to restore them. It comes down to hard work. However, knowledge of the following issues can mean that you are ready to accept wood floor restoration is needed.
Crowning
This is where your floorboards can become misshapen. If water or moisture sits on the boards, it can be soaked in and cause swelling to the centre of the boards. This gives the appearance of a hump in the individual boards. Prior to any restoration work, it is very important that the boards are dried thoroughly.
Cupping
This is the opposite issue in comparison to crowning. This can often happen if moisture or water is absorbed from underneath the wooden boards. The moisture will cause the edges of the boards to warp, giving it a cupped appearance. Again, it is very important that all moisture is drawn from the floor. Furthermore, it is important to make sure that the subfloor underneath is ok and supportive. Without this, any fixes will likely not last long.
Gaps
Gaps between your individual boards can appear over time. Naturally wooden boards shrink during the winter and expand during the summer months. There is often more moisture in the air during summer months. If your wooden floor starts to look like gaps are appearing, it is important to ask for help. There are simple ways to fix this issue. However, it is vital to check the subfloor before completing any restoration work. Without this the gaps will likely crack again, undoing any of your hard work.
