Damaged Wooden Floors

The cause of damaged wood floors can stem from many different things. This can even start before your boards are even laid. How? Your wooden floor will be laid on something we refer to as a ‘sub-floor’. If this is incorrectly prepared, you will likely experience ongoing issues. A sub-floor needs to be level and dry. Unevenness of your sub-floor can mean your wood boards above may bend, move or even crack. Furthermore, moisture can travel up from your sub-floor into your new floor, distorting and lifting the individual boards. From this information, you can tell that it is well worth making sure this part of the process is done correctly.

Damaged wooden floor BirminghamMoving naturally on from this is the damage that can be caused by incorrect installation. Any wood floor should be laid with an expansion gap around the edge. Without this, the boards have no way of moving as they expand and contract in different temperatures. In extreme cases, this can cause warping, rising and even breakages.

Probably the most likely damage will be caused by scratches or dents. Scratches can remain as very superficial, or they can be much deeper. Sand, grit and dirt brought in underfoot can act like sandpaper to any wood floor. This will mean it will start to look dull and worn in areas. Larger scratches and dents can be caused by large furniture.

Another area of damage can be caused by water. Water and wood generally do not agree. Water, if left on the surface can cause discolouration. In cases of major flooding the entire floor can be ruined. Rest assured that we will be on hand to offer support on how to find the best way forward.
